John,
Five years ago today, we witnessed an assault on our democracy, when extremists rioted in the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to silence the will of the voters.
In the years since, our democracy has been protected by state and local elected officials who have fought for free and fair elections even when it came with personal and political costs.
These state and local leaders often don’t make the headlines, but they’ve been essential to preserving our democracy:
- Secretaries of state have decisively rejected false claims of voter fraud.
- District attorneys and attorneys general have investigated and prosecuted election interference.
- State lawmakers have expanded ballot access and strengthened penalties for voter intimidation.
Simultaneously, attacks on our elections have continued: Extremist GOP leaders across the country have pushed for laws that make it more difficult to vote, specifically targeting young people, communities of color, women, and working families.
They’ve attacked mail-in voting, purged voter roles, and used disinformation campaigns to justify anti-democratic power grabs.
And let’s be clear: access to the ballot and access to abortion are deeply intertwined.
Abortion rights are broadly popular. When voters have had the chance to weigh in directly, abortion rights have won from Kansas to Montana to Ohio.
The GOP knows this: that’s why so many of the same politicians working to restrict the right to vote are also working to restrict our reproductive freedom.
Five years after the January 6th attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 elections, the lesson is clear. Our democracy is only as strong as the leaders willing to defend it.
This fight is far from over, so thank you for joining us in the movement dedicated to elect state and local leaders who will champion our freedoms, at the ballot box and in the doctor’s office.
With gratitude,
Team Vote Pro-Choice
