Here's the latest on our fight to stop Trump from ordering unidentified Homeland Security officers into our city streets against the wishes of local officials.

For the last several days, I've been working to amend the National Defense Authorization Act--a military spending bill--to prohibit the use of federal agents as secret police.

Unfortunately, Senator Mitch McConnell and the Republican leadership refused to even allow a vote.

Over the last few nights in Portland, thousands of peaceful protesters took to the streets, including some of my own staff and the Mayor of Portland. Several nights running, before midnight, camo-clad federal officers released tear gas on the crowd indiscriminately as well as shooting projectiles and wielding batons.

These actions by Homeland Security are unacceptable. I don't say this lightly--this is un-American.

In America, we respect--no, we cherish--the right to peacefully assemble, the right to free speech, the right to protest your government.

Donald Trump doesn't respect America, he doesn't respect our Constitution, and he doesn't respect the American people.

But the problem isn't just in the White House. It's in the Senate. Republicans repeatedly blocked my efforts this week to simply get a vote on an amendment to say "no secret police on America's streets." We have over 40 Democrats cosponsoring this amendment. If Democrats were in charge, we'd have gotten the job done.

We must eject Trump from the White House and take back the US Senate to get this country back on track.
