When the clock struck midnight on New Year’s, Zohran Mamdani officially
took office as the Mayor of New York City, promising to deliver on his
bold agenda.

Zohran’s victory was powered by young voters. He didn’t pander to them. He
treated New Yorkers of all ages with respect, offering specific policies
to improve their lives, and meeting them in the places where they already
consume content. He did something rarely seen in politics — he actually
listened. He asked voters what he could do for them instead of telling
voters what he thought they wanted to hear.

Leaders We Deserve made a major investment in Zohran’s primary election
because he is the kind of leader we were built to support: young,
unapologetically progressive, ready to win. He mobilized an entire
generation in NYC by giving them something to vote for, not just something
to vote against and in doing so, he inspired thousands of young people to
run for office themselves. Leaders like Mayor Mamdani are exactly why we
exist. Gen Z understands that no single person is coming to save us, but
that together, as a generation, we can put this country back on track.

The first step is believing that it is actually possible to win elections
by running grassroots campaigns grounded in progressive values without
support from special interests. To make that belief real, we have to elect
young progressive leaders who don’t simply replicate the politics of those
currently in power, but raise the standard. Leaders who reject
special-interest money and govern with one clear priority: serving their
