Friend,

Neal’s campaign just attacked our ad with a tone-deaf statement saying “addiction and loss are not political.”

It's easy to say that addiction and loss aren't political when you haven't experienced them personally, or when you have the money to afford the best treatment options. But for families like mine who have lost someone to the opioid epidemic, it is political.

It was political every time Neal blocked efforts to reform the healthcare system that made it so hard for my brother to get treatment. Battling addiction is hard enough, no one should have to battle health insurance companies at the same time. But for the last 20 years of my brother’s life, that’s what we went through.

What’s truly despicable and appalling is to see Neal take money from those same health insurance companies that profit off of our pain, and the same drug companies that pushed opioids into our communities in the first place. To families like mine, it’s a slap in the face.

Our ad’s message is a simple but important one: That we deserve leaders who will fight for the transformative solutions desperately needed by families in our communities. Let’s make sure this message is heard by every voter in the district. Can you make a contribution right now to keep our ad on the air?

On the same day that we found out that Doug had overdosed, I saw a picture of some politicians in suits, patting themselves on the back, announcing a grant to fight the opioid epidemic. That’s what came to mind when I saw Neal’s team respond to my ad with “but we got this grant in 2017.”

To Richie Neal this is just a talking point. To me, it’s about real people who are struggling and need help. That’s why I think that we need more people with these real-life experiences and perspectives in Congress.

My brother’s experience with addiction is a big part of why I’m running, and I’m not going to stop talking about it. Can you chip in right now to help me get this message in front of more voters today?

The purpose of politics is to turn private suffering into collective action. Together, with the knowledge and strength gained by our lived experiences, we are going to build a better future for our communities.

Thank you for being a part of our movement,

Alex
