Dear Friend,
It’s Joe Courtney.
Happy New Year to everyone in Connecticut’s Second Congressional District! I wish you and your family a happy, healthy, and safe 2026. I’m looking forward to another year of working alongside the caring, hard working people of the Second District, fighting for our region’s priorities.
Survey: What Should Congress Focus On in 2026?
I won’t sugarcoat it. The 119th Congress was extremely dysfunctional in 2025. There is a laundry list of priorities that need to be addressed in 2026: lowering the cost of living, providing long-overdue oversight, and connecting people to good jobs.
I want to hear your top priorities for 2026. What should Congress focus on most? Your input shapes my work.
ICYMI: Discharge Petition Sets Up Vote to Lower Health Care Costs for Millions
At the start of 2026, millions of Americans are seeing their health care costs go up, in many cases by thousands of dollars per month, because leaders in Washington chose not to extend Affordable Care Act tax credits. For many, these cost hikes are impossible to manage, and they will be forced to go uninsured.
On November 12th, I signed onto a discharge petition to force a vote on extending the ACA tax credits by three years. After months of obstruction by House Speaker Mike Johnson, two weeks ago, the discharge petition reached the required signatures to force a vote. Under House rules, the Speaker must bring the three year extension up for a vote in early January.
74% of Americans support extending the ACA tax credits, according to the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation. For a nation that has repeatedly asked leaders in Washington to lower costs, this vote will be a defining moment. Congress must bring down the skyrocketing health care costs for working families, the middle class, and small businesses, and deliver real, long-term solutions to lower health care costs for good.
Thank you for taking some time to read my update. If my office can be of any assistance, do not hesitate to call us at (860) 886-0139.
Sincerely,
Joe Courtney
Member of Congress
