Hi John,
“Our children must be educated, not indoctrinated.”
That’s about the only Donald Trump quote you’ll ever see us agree with.
It does look like we have very different definitions of the word “indoctrinated,” however. In Trump’s mind, the free exchange of ideas on college campuses is indoctrination -- and merits cuts to public education funding.
But we know the truth -- indoctrination is exactly what Trump and his allies are after.
Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos made her priorities clear in a 2001 interview when she said “There are not enough philanthropic dollars in America to fund what is currently the need in education…Our desire is to confront the culture in ways that will continue to advance God’s kingdom.”
Translation: American taxpayers need to subsidize a Christian nationalist agenda, in American schools, directed at American children.
And under the current administration, that’s exactly what’s happening. DeVos is now forcing public schools to share their taxpayer-backed relief money with faith-based private schools. DeVos’s rationale for shattering the wall of separation between church and state? “The virus affects everyone.”
That’s true -- and it’s exactly why we should help the most vulnerable. Like the undocumented American students who DeVos is right now fighting to block relief from, not the wealthy religious institutions she’s decided deserve it more.
With your help, we’ve fought back against this dangerous hypocrisy. We’ve worked to increase nontheist representation at all levels of government, and we’ve committed to keeping our supporters informed and engaged about the worst abuses of the Christian right -- abuses many may not even know are occurring.
We need to raise $5,000 by the end of July if we want to be able to push back against the hateful agenda being enacted across the country. With your help, we can defend the rights of the many from the tyranny of the few. Will you give what you can to bolster our fight for science-based government in the face of dogmatic opposition?
Your support means the world to us -- and to the Americans who still prefer a Democracy to DeVos’s Theocracy.
Thank you,
Center for Freethought Equality
