ACLU Supporter, our country's landmark civil rights legislation – the Voting Rights Act (VRA) – turned 60 this year. This law prohibits racial discrimination in voting, and its legacy has never been more at risk. At the ACLU's Voting Rights Project, we've frequently relied on the VRA to combat discrimination and voter suppression, litigating at least 20 cases under the act in the past decade alone. Each case represents thousands to millions of voters – real people whose fundamental rights hang in the balance. That's why this should alarm every American – and why my team's work is imperative now: The foundation supporting decades of wins for voting rights is cracking, and attacks are accelerating. Since a 2013 Supreme Court decision that targeted voting rights, state legislatures have mounted a coordinated attack on voting access and introduced hundreds of voter suppression bills – disproportionately shutting voters of color and disabled, lower-income, and elderly voters out of our democratic processes. Now, in a case we argued earlier this year called Louisiana v. Callais concerning Louisiana's redistricting map, the Supreme Court could strike down Section 2 of the VRA – a tool we've frequently used to block racially discriminatory maps. This could undo 60 years of progress. In this urgent moment for voting rights and our fundamental freedoms, I am reminded that even the strongest pillars need maintenance, reinforcement, and defenders, and I am asking you to be one of them. In the months and years ahead, the ACLU will fight tirelessly to protect and expand our rights in the courts, in Congress, and in communities nationwide, just as we have for over 100 years. But we urgently need you with us, ACLU Supporter. Thank you for being with us in this critical fight, now and in the year ahead. Sophia Lin Lakin |
