A few weeks ago, I sat down with Charlamagne tha God on The Breakfast Club and talked about confronting racism on the floor of the South Carolina State House. I talked about what it means to speak up when others stay silent and when white supremacy is treated like just another policy disagreement.

Not long after that interview, the same hatred showed up in this campaign.

During an online campaign event, someone entered the chat and wrote:

“Trump is going to remove you n****** soon its only a matter of freaking time. YOU STUPID BLACK N******.”

John, this is the reality of running for office as a Black man who refuses to stay quiet. I’ve seen this kind of thing before.What matters now is how we respond to it. 

We are approaching our first end of quarter fundraising deadline. I have watched people with power stay quiet while racism moved through the State House like it was normal. I have seen white supremacy treated as something to maneuver around instead of confront. Now that same hatred is turning its attention to this campaign.

The thing about me, folks, is that I don’t soften the truth to make others comfortable, I don’t lower my voice when the moment demands clarity, and I don’t shy away from calling out racism when I encounter it. 

South Carolina deserves leadership that will not look away when hate shows up, whether it comes from a floor vote or an anonymous threat. That’s the fight I am in, and I need good folks like you to stand with me.
