YEAR 2025
Let's start with the bad - Shuttering the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention and gutting the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was BAD. Staff cuts, leadership chaos, and policy shifts undermined institutional knowledge and the CDC's public health defense mission.
And the UGLY - School and mass shootings continued. The most recent publicized shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island left two students dead and nine injured. Two student survivors, Mia Tretta (21) and Zoe Weissman (20), had previously survived mass shootings at Saugus HS in California and Parkland Florida respectively. We've reached a disturbing reality where individuals now endure multiple mass shootings in one lifetime.
Yet, still thankful for the good - Data confirms states with stronger gun safety laws and fewer guns have lower gun death rates. Massachusetts achieved the nation's lowest gun death rate in 2024. SHV continues to advocate for common-sense gun safety legislation [[link removed]] , including Firearm Industry Accountability and an Act to Stop Mass Shootings, both currently moving through our state legislature.

Taking action beyond words, SHV executive director stepped up as a captain at Newtown Action Alliance's annual Survivors on the Hill Advocacy Day in Washington D.C. She championed crucial federal bills including an Assault Weapons Ban, Safe Storage and Break the Cycle of Violence Act.
