When the January fires couldn't be contained for several weeks, Southern Californians felt helpless. But we knew we had to do something tangible to help those directly affected. So we collected clothes, toiletries, diapers, and other supplies and donated them to the hundreds of families who lost their homes.
However, since Breathe Southern California focused on wildfire preparedness and wildfire smoke for the previous four years, when the fires affected our friends and neighbors, we knew we needed to step up and do something tangible.
Through community partnerships, donor support, and a dedicated staff on the ground and in the community, we helped impacted families by handing out hundreds of air filters, conducting lung screenings, and sharing tips, resources, and educational information (through workshops, media interviews, and op-eds), to help Southern Californians understand what was in our air, and how to determine when the air was too dangerous to go outside.
