A message from our Executive Director, Sara Johnson

Dear John,

Imagine this: A senior waiting at a bus stop in the Excelsior to get to a medical appointment. A student trying to get to school in the Bayview. Someone working a night shift who depends on the 29 Sunset to get home safely.

When public transportation services are cut, these aren't statistics; they are us, our neighbors, our communities, and our connections to community assets.

As I reflect on my first year as Executive Director here at San Francisco Transit Riders, I'm overwhelmed by all that we've accomplished together. When devastating proposed service cuts, we didn't back down. We mobilized and rallied at City Hall and with our dedicated community of riders and members to advocate against systemwide service cuts for buses and trains that our families and communities rely on every single day.

This year marked our 15th anniversary as an organization, and we proved that riders' voices hold power and community building works. But 2026 will be our biggest challenge yet. There will be transit funding measures that will determine our public transit's future.

We need you in this fight with us!

Please consider donating today. Your donation goes to empowering riders, voter education, and advocacy that keep our communities connected. Will you help us continue to grow and protect transit that keeps San Francisco moving?

Every route saved is someone who can get to their job, doctors, and their loved ones. That's what we are fighting for.

Thank you for standing with riders and happy holidays,

Sara Johnson

Executive Director, San Francisco Transit Riders

Your donation could fund:

A community space to convene and power build

We envision a dedicated space for staff, board, members, and riders to meet regularly and organize future advocacy efforts. This will be our creative space, which we can design, maintain, and utilize together. This can be a space for membership meetings, member-led projects, meetings with our city’s leaders, new member meetings, storage for advocacy materials, and more.

Voter education for upcoming regional and local ballot measures

2026 is going to be a big year for transit funding at the polls. We want to ensure all of our members and local riders are informed of each of the ballot measures that will be available in the coming year. We plan to conduct voting education through membership meetings, collaborative events with other CBOs, and informative graphics that you can share with others.

More membership opportunities and increased staff capacity

We hope to continue finding opportunities to provide our members with leadership opportunities. SFTR hopes to one day establish member leads who understand the organization’s mission and values and complete official SFTR training, to represent SFTR at in-person events, tabling opportunities, meetings with our city’s leaders, member-led meetings, and interviews with local publications.
