In Virginia, we didn’t just flip seats: We helped elect leaders who understand that reproductive freedom is inseparable from economic security, healthcare access, and gender justice. They know what we know — that it’s often in state capitols, not just Washington, D.C., where our most fundamental freedoms are decided.
And Virginia wasn’t an outlier.
Across the country, in special elections and down-ballot races, Democrats delivered double-digit swings. Those results send a clear message: with the right investment and strategy, we have a real opportunity to win back meaningful political power in 2026.
But none of this was inevitable.

As the year comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on what we were able to accomplish together, even against the backdrop of Trump and his allies working day after day to dismantle our democracy.
This year, we flipped critical seats in Virginia, helping to elect a diverse, values-driven class of pro-choice candidates and booting out legislators who voted against the right to abortion and contraception. We swept the statewide offices, and won every legislative district that we ran programming in.
This wasn’t just about winning individual races, it was about building the state-wide political power required to pass a pro-choice amendment in Virginia next year, safeguarding abortion rights for millions of patients across the Southeast.
One of the biggest lessons from our wins this year is that early money changes the map.
When we invest before the spotlight turns on, we are able to:
>> Help voters understand what incumbent electeds have done (or not done!)
>> Reach potential voters who are often overlooked by traditional party infrastructure
>> Compete in districts previously thought of as ‘unwinnable’ for Democrats
