As 2025 comes to a close, I’m proud of what CREW has done to defend our democracy and clear-eyed about what lies ahead.

Just one year into another Trump administration, we already know this much:

Guardrails are under stress, abuses of power are escalating and the next chapter — 2026 included — is anything but predictable. What is certain is that we have to hold the line.

That’s exactly what we’ve been doing at CREW. This year, we’ve taken on some of our biggest fights yet — from suing DOGE to force compliance with the Freedom of Information Act and federal records laws, to holding the Department of Homeland Security accountable for turning the SAVE system into a tool for potentially inaccurate citizenship checks tied to voter eligibility. These were critical battles — and we’ve had some key wins. But the work is far from over.

Trump has threatened political opponents, stacked his administration with wealthy insiders with numerous conflicts of interest and refused to divest from his businesses. In his first year back in office, he’s tested the limits of the law — and the institutions meant to enforce it.

That’s why our work to hold him accountable is more important than ever. And it’s why we can’t afford to slow down heading into 2026.
