Email from MCRGO   MICHIGAN COALITION FOR RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERS "Promoting safe use and ownership of firearms through education, litigation, and legislation." MONDAY E'NEWS Year-End Legislative Update House Bill 4285, which will provide for firearms safety instruction at the middle school and high school levels, was signed into law on Tuesday, December 23, as Public Act 48 of 2025. MCRGO congratulates its sponsor, Rep. Curt VanderWall (R-Ludington). This past year has been dramatic with the early consideration of anti-gun legislation in the Michigan Senate to expand the red flag law, ban bump stocks, increase pistol-free zones, and ban home-built firearms. These failed bills were followed by publication of the governor's Gun Violence Task Force Report. The Michigan House of Representatives quickly seized back the momentum. The House Judiciary Committee, under Chair Sarah Lightner (R-Springport), took up legislation to reduce CPL renewal fees from $115 to $30, reduce the minimum age of a CPL applicant from 21 to 18, allow CPL applications to be made in any county, repeal Michigan's red flag law, and provide for a grace period for CPL denials due to administrative error. Rep. Phil Green (R-Millington) also used his power on the House Appropriations Committee to defund the governor's "snitch line" as part of $645 million in wasteful program spending cuts. Ultimately, the only firearms-related bill that made it into law was firearms safety instruction, which enjoyed bipartisan support. As Michigan's legislative session continues for two years, all existing legislation remains in play until the end of 2026. With midterm elections looming and control of the state legislature split between a Republican majority in the Michigan House and Democrats in the state senate, odds are long for any new firearms laws in Whitmer's final year as a term-limited governor. The workgroup is open to all members of MCRGO. The workgroup will especially benefit from marketing professionals, younger members, firearms instructors, other firearms professionals, people with experience in the use of social media and artificial intelligence for marketing and communication, elected officials, and underrepresented populations in the firearms community, such as women. The workgroup will: Align marketing with MCRGO’s mission by defining core messaging, tone, and target audiences. Strengthen branding and digital presence. Develop a content strategy to plan regular content through legislative updates, public safety education, training resources, and event promotion. Grow and engage membership with targeted messaging, recruitment channels, and incentives. Expand media relations, partnerships, and community outreach to increase visibility and credibility. Establish workflows, metrics, and reporting tools to track marketing effectiveness and guide ongoing improvement. The workgroup will communicate through Slack. Slack is an asynchronous meeting platform that lets people contribute on their own time, making it ideal for participants with busy or varied schedules. It reduces the need for live video meetings, prevents long email chains, and encourages more thoughtful, equitable participation. Because discussions are organized in threads and automatically documented, it improves clarity, institutional memory, and decision-making. It also supports distributed workflows, allowing members to share drafts, give feedback, and progress work without coordinating schedules, while requiring minimal technology and making participation easier for everyone. Slack has a fast and easy learning curve. If you are interested in joining the MCRGO Marketing Workgroup conversation on Slack, please email [email protected] with the request to be sent an invitation.
