Herbert – I have an unlikely story to tell you.

I grew up as a racial, religious, and ethnic minority immigrant with 29 letters in my name. 

My family worked hard to achieve the American Dream, but we faced tough times and had to rely for a time on food stamps and public housing to get by.  

But thanks to these programs, a lot of hard work, and support from our community, we defied the odds and found a path to the middle class. 

Look, there aren’t a whole lot of people with backgrounds and stories like mine in the halls of Congress. 

When I first ran for office, a lot of people told me that I didn’t have the right background or connections to win. It wasn’t the first time I was written off — but voters proved them wrong.

Together we defied the odds again – and I had the honor of being elected as Illinois' first Indian-American Congressman.
