John —Every now and then, I wonder what this young girl would think if someone told her she’d be Governor one day.

She probably wouldn’t believe it, because politics was always the furthest thing from her mind. She was just focused on her family, studying hard in school, and doing some good in the world by volunteering at her church.

She was flipping burgers at her local Burger King, saving up to pay her way through college. As a working-class kid from Tempe, the idea of running for office never crossed her mind. That’s not something people like her were supposed to do.

But if she knew all she would accomplish in public office, I’d like to think she’d be proud.

Proud that she cancelled medical debt for thousands of Arizonans. Proud that when extremists attacked abortion rights and the right to vote, she stood strong and helped safeguard those freedoms. Proud that she protected healthcare and crucial safety nets from being ripped away from our state’s most vulnerable people.

Most of all, I think she’d be proud that she’s living proof that public service can be about putting the needs of working-class families first, not the ultra-wealthy.

It might not occur to her that it’d take a heck of a fight to accomplish all that, or that she’d need a strong team like this one by her side to get the job done.

Boy, does she know it now. And she couldn’t be more grateful. Truly.
