John, I am back today with another personal testimony from a survivor of online sexual exploitation and abuse (OSEA), an alarming and growing global trend that demands our attention as well as legal and systemic change. Today, I want to introduce you to Ivy, a young woman from Kenya, who was raped by someone she met online.

Ivy met a man through Facebook who seemed genuine. Eventually, she agreed to meet him in person for lunch and drinks, but he drugged her without her knowledge, and he and another man raped her. Ivy said, “It wasn’t just the physical pain; I was terrified, humiliated and completely powerless.” She sought justice, but when she approached the police, she was told she’d have to pay for them to track down the perpetrators. “I’d already lost so much that day, and now it felt like I was being punished again,” she said. “The system that was supposed to help me felt like another betrayal.”

Worldwide, 18% of young people have had a sexual image shared, and every day, there are 60,000 reports of child sexual abuse online. And in the European Union, 1 in 10 women have experienced cyber-harassment. While women and girls are disproportionately impacted, these crimes affect everyone. No one is safe from OSEA – and that’s why everyone needs Equality Now. We are working alongside survivors to ensure internet regulations and laws that will protect all of us from such abuse.

As part of our work to address OSEA, we are also working to strengthen understanding of the algorithms and machine learning that is grooming young men into misogynist ideologies. And, we are working to counter disinformation and misinformation, which are often used by anti-rights movements to undermine gender equality. Whether through coordinated “manosphere” attacks on women leaders, fabricated narratives about feminism, or algorithm-driven amplification of misogyny and other forms of hate, disinformation erodes public trust, legitimises discrimination, fuels policy rollbacks, and leads to online and offline violations of women and girls.
