When Luz fled her abusive partner, she feared not only his violence but also what leaving might mean for her immigration status. As a conditional resident with two young children, she had been completely dependent on him for her legal standing — a fear her abuser used to control her.
Through POV’s legal advocacy program, Luz found both safety and a path forward. Our attorneys helped her obtain a restraining order with a move-out order, along with custody and child support protections that allowed her and her children to remain safe. POV’s legal team also assisted her in filing a waiver of the joint petition requirement to remove the conditions on her green card — a critical step for survivors who must separate from their abuser to remain secure in this country.
Advocates stood beside her in court, guiding her through every step, translating when needed, and ensuring her voice was heard.
Today, Luz has a steady job, her children are thriving, and she volunteers at community events to help others find the same safety she did.
