Yet, opponents to such measures as nicotine bans say the effort doesn’t guarantee improved public health. A federal bankruptcy judge has approved Purdue Pharma’s $7 billion settlement plan, clearing the way to resolve thousands of lawsuits over the OxyContin maker’s role in the opioid epidemic. The ruling brings a long-running legal battle closer to an end after years of appeals that reached the Supreme Court. Those who believe catastrophic asset spend-down is the dominant precursor to Medicaid enrollment will excoriate this approach. They will claim incorrectly that the existing long-term care (LTC) system already impoverishes millions and withdrawing Medicaid subsidies from the affluent will impoverish even more.
