Friend,

Earlier this year, I had the privilege of joining People For the American
Way Foundation’s Young Elected Officials Network at its 20th anniversary
convening. I left with a steady, unmistakable conviction.

Leadership like this does not appear out of nowhere. It is developed. It
is strengthened. It endures only when we choose to invest in it, recognize
its value, and commit to helping it grow.

At the convening, I met young leaders from across the country who are
already taking on the hard, everyday work of public service: listening to
their neighbors, solving problems, and leading with purpose.

I was honored to help lead a session and spend time with YEO members
one-on-one. What I heard was honest and consistent. Public service can be
isolating, especially when you are young and newly elected.

Too often, the message is: figure it out on your own.

The YEO Network exists to fill that gap. It provides real training,
trusted relationships, and a community that helps young leaders grow into
their roles with confidence and support.

Network. >>

Twenty years into this program, I am convinced its impact has never been
more important. At the convening, I met young officials juggling real
responsibilities, balancing budgets, responding to constituents, and
making decisions that affect people’s daily lives, often much earlier in
their careers than leaders of previous generations.

Without the right support, that pressure can push talented people out of
public service before they ever have the chance to grow into their full
potential.

The Young Elected Officials Network helps prevent that loss. By investing
in leaders early, it makes public service sustainable and allows
experience, judgment, and confidence to develop over time.

leaders have the mentorship and infrastructure to keep serving their
communities, not just for a season, but for the long term.

With gratitude,

Kathleen Turner
