Hi friends,

Thursday’s Hanukkiah Lighting at the Colorado Capital felt heavy. We are still
processing the devastating shooting that occurred in Australia last Sunday.

The Jewish community of Sydney gathered on Bondi Beach to ring in the first
night of Hanukkah when two gunmen opened fire - killing 15 and injuring at
least 29. The rise in antisemitism has contributed to violence in communities
around the world - including in Boulder just a few months back - and it must be
condemned. Violence is never the answer. My heart is with the victims, their
loved ones, and Jewish communities everywhere who are once again being forced
to grieve in moments that should be filled with light and joy.

I’ve learned through my wife that the beauty of the Jewish people lies in
resilience - and we learn that lesson through the story of Hanukkah. So, even
as we hurt for the Jewish community of Sydney and for Jews around the world -
we gathered and we celebrated. We practiced centuries-old traditions. We
educated and included allies, neighbors, and friends. Because that’s just what
Jews do - even in the darkest of times.

Hanukkah means dedication, and I can think of no better value to hold dear in
these times. The Festival of Lights is a time to rededicate ourselves to
resilience, hope, faith, community, and to working together to illuminate the
path forward. May the remaining days of the holiday bring warmth to your homes,
strength to your spirit, and resolve to us all.
