Friend,

I want to share remarks from two presidents -- one, Lyndon B. Johnson, upon signing the Voting Rights Act in 1965:

"Millions of Americans are denied the right to vote because of their color. This law will ensure them the right to vote. The wrong is one which no American, in his heart, can justify. The right is one which no American, true to our principles, can deny."

And another, from President Trump, during a rally in Arizona on June 23:

"The Democrats are also trying to rig the election by sending tens of millions of ballots using the China virus as the excuse for allowing people not to go to the polls...This will be, in my opinion, the most corrupt election in the history of our country, and we cannot let this happen."

President Johnson knew, like we know now, that making it easier to vote is a tremendous achievement in a democracy. Vote-by-mail is an extension of the work he began in 1965 and a true work in democratic leadership -- one President Trump seems to have no interest in furthering.

Recent elections have proven that we need national investment in vote-by-mail before November's elections -- if you agree, add your name next to mine right now.

Vote-by-mail is the easiest, safest, most reliable method of voting there is -- period. We already know that here in Washington state and in traditionally red states like Utah, too. This isn't a partisan issue.

In Washington state, vote-by-mail has been an unprecedented spectacular success, and we've been thrilled to see that voter participation has gone up -- that's why I'm confident that there is zero reason not to have a mail-in ballot under any condition, and certainly not when Americans have to risk their lives to cast their ballots.

It's clear that Donald Trump and his Republican allies are afraid that more people will vote with vote-by-mail provisions. But that shouldn't be a fear -- it should be a hope.

Because when voting irregularities disproportionately affect communities of color -- like the long lines we've seen at voting places across the country affecting especially, and disproportionately, communities with majority Black populations -- we're not living up to the ideals of voting rights icons. We're catering to the absurd fears of Donald Trump.

Vote-by-mail is the next step in the fight against voter suppression and the safest, easiest, and most reliable voting method there is -- if you agree, add your name next to mine to call for nationwide vote-by-mail before November's election.

Very truly yours,

Jay
