The Trump administration’s Department of Justice is taking its dangerous legal campaign even further — this time by suing Fulton County, Georgia for access to ballots and election records from the 2020 presidential election.
This lawsuit isn’t really about election security. DOJ lawyers are demanding “all used and void ballots, stubs, signature envelopes, and corresponding digital files” from that election, five years after it was certified and after repeated recounts and audits confirmed the results.
At the same time, the DOJ has already filed or pursued lawsuits against at least 18 states for voter registration data — including full lists with names, addresses, driver’s license numbers, and parts of Social Security numbers — as part of an unprecedented push to centralize sensitive voter information.
This is a full‑on escalation of Trump’s longstanding, baseless claims that the 2020 election was “rigged”, claims that have been repeatedly debunked in court and by multiple audits.
Democratic Secretaries of State are one of the last remaining checks on this authoritarian agenda. They don’t answer to the president. They answer to the people.
