| Hello John, The Senate delivered a big win for fiscal sanity and accountability last week when it refused to extend the temporary plussed-up Obamacare premiums that expire at the end of the year. Now it is the House’s turn, and it will be an uphill fight! Because there is so much disinformation flying around in cyberspace about what this means, another quick recap is in order. Bear with me. To help Americans get through Covid, then-President Joe Biden temporarily increased the amount of the subsidies that help Americans buy overpriced health insurance on the Obamacare websites. Here’s the truth: These inflated subsidies expire at the end of the month, at which time they will revert to their pre-Covid levels. So, despite what you may hear from the Democrats, Obamacare subsidies aren’t going anywhere. It’s only the Covid-era plus-up that is expiring. Here are four reasons the Senate did the right thing in letting the subsidy plus-ups expire: - The pandemic is over. These higher subsidies were meant as temporary measures for a temporary crisis. It’s time to move on.
- We can’t afford it. This expansion costs taxpayers over $30 billion a year, adding to a national debt that already exceeds $38 trillion.
- Obamacare subsidies invite fraud. The Obamacare Covid subsidies led to an explosion of waste, fraud, and abuse. Experts estimate that at least $27 billion is wasted annually on phantom enrollees and improper payments — money that goes directly to insurance companies and pads their profits.
- It drives up costs. With nearly half of Obamacare recipients now paying nothing for their insurance, there is no incentive to shop for value. This fuels inflation and raises prices for everyone.
The bill would have extended the fraud-prone Obamacare subsidies for three years, with the goal of eventually making them a permanent expansion of government. We cannot let that happen! And now, the House in January is scheduled to vote on the same bad idea. Covid is long over. The masks are gone. Kids are back at school. Americans are working. So why keep these higher subsidies? To hear the Democrats tell it, a return to pre-Covid Obamacare would be a catastrophe for the American people — a not-so-tacit admission that the health insurance scheme they’ve lauded the past 15 years is no darn good. To be clear, it isn’t. It’s why we at AFP just launched a new website to expose the truth about Obamacare, with a catchy name: TheTruthAboutObamacare.com. This new site uses the left’s own words and the promises they made about Obamacare and compares them to what has actually happened. It’s not a pretty picture! Even I was a little shocked at some of the outlandish promises that Democrats made about Obamacare. Almost nothing they said about it has come to pass. 🔎 Go deeper We need real health care affordability and serious reforms that reverse Obamacare’s massive failures. Sending more taxpayer handouts to health insurance companies would only mask the high costs, not bring them down. 1️⃣ So please take a few minutes to browse the new page. Bookmark it and keep it handy. It’s a valuable resource for determining Obamacare rhetoric from reality. |
