If you liked that one I’m going to assume you’re down to clown a little more. The following list comes from State Senator James Talarico, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Texas, a church-going Christian and one of the strongest supporters of church-state separation you can find. We could work with that.
Senator James Talarico’s Five Reasons Beer is Better Than Religion
- When you have beer you don’t go door to door trying to give it away.
- No one has been burned at the stake because of their favorite brand of beer.
- There are laws against forcing beer on minors who can’t think for themselves.
- You don’t have to wait more than 2,000 years for your second beer.
- If you’ve devoted your life to beer there are groups to help you.
Senator Talarico is the one who mocked the state senators who supported the bill that would put the Ten Commandments in every Texas classroom. He had questions for the bill sponsor like, “Should members of the legislature focus more on trying to follow the Ten Commandments rather than telling others to follow them?” Also, “Would the sponsor of this bill agree to move the scheduled vote from Sunday to Monday so we don’t violate the Fourth Commandment about not working on Sundays?” (She did not.)

Lobby Day is March 10, less than three months away. Registration is now open and you can sign up here. We say “No experience necessary” and that’s true; no one expects you to be a policy expert. You’re a constituent and your views on how policies affect you are what people on the Hill will be interested in hearing. We’ll get you ready with a pre-lobby day zoom and a breakfast strategy session. We also schedule all your meetings for you.
We have about six weeks left to decide what bill to support and you never know what’s going to come up. Just this week Christian nationalist Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced that he’s going to fix the military’s chaplain corps by, for one thing, streamlining the choices soldiers get when they state their religion. The long, long list currently includes atheist, agnostic, no preference, no religion, and humanist. Currently about 20 percent pick one of those, and I’m guessing those choices will change. In this video Hegseth blames secular humanism for the ills in the chaplain corps despite there being no humanist or atheist chaplains.
So, we will pick our issue by the end of January but if you want a hotel room from our reserved block at the nearby Phoenix Park Hotel I encourage you to register soon.
