Across the country, we’re seeing calls for restrictions designed to make voting harder — cuts to early voting [1], voter roll purges [2], the elimination of drop boxes [3], stricter ID requirements [4], and bureaucratic hurdles meant to confuse and deter everyday Americans.

We’ve seen the consequences of these tactics before: long lines, rejected registrations, misinformation, and voters who don’t discover they’ve been purged until they show up on Election Day.

And this time, the threats are even more serious.

Election experts warn that our federal government itself has become a threat to free and fair elections [5] — with critical protections dismantled, oversight weakened, and political pressure applied to the election workers responsible for running our democracy.

This is why Common Cause is already preparing for 2026.

Our election protection work — the largest nonpartisan program in the country — is growing now, not later. In 2024, our teams:

• Deployed more than 15,000 volunteers across all 50 states

• Staffed hotlines that helped voters overcome last-minute rule changes

• Coordinated legal experts to respond in real time to intimidation, misinformation, and illegal barriers

• Monitored social media and community reports to stop disinformation before it spread

And we are preparing to do even more in 2026.

John, we cannot take the right to vote for granted. Not when legislatures are advancing new restrictions. Not when federal protections are being rolled back. And not when powerful voices are working to weaken the very infrastructure that keeps our elections free and fair.
