Truth Initiative joined the 2025 Celebration Bowl ([link removed]) last weekend in Atlanta, where fans gathered for the annual HBCU national championship game on Saturday, December 13. Truth Initiative’s presence brought attention to the disproportionate impact of tobacco on Black health ([link removed]) , building on the work of its Culture + Cessation Collective ([link removed]) by bringing culturally relevant quitting support directly to HBCU students, alumni, and fans through EX Program, ([link removed]) a free, digital quitting program developed by Truth Initiative with Mayo Clinic.

What is hookah? ([link removed])

The hookah is a centuries-old waterpipe used for smoking flavored tobacco called shisha, which is heated by charcoal to create smoke that is inhaled through a hose and mouthpiece. Although people largely perceive hookah as less harmful than cigarettes, hookah smoke contains many of the same harmful ingredients found in cigarette smoke and can put users at risk for many of the same diseases. Black Americans are disproportionately impacted by hookah use as well as cigar, cigarillo, and little cigar use ([link removed] Use Among Black Americans.pdf) , and current hookah smoking is higher among lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults ([link removed]) compared to their heterosexual peers.
