Australia experienced one of its darkest moments last Sunday.
As the nation mourns, my team and I have been in Bondi every day this week listening to the Jewish community. Their message is clear: the time for words is over and the time for action is now.
Jewish Australians are heartbroken. Australians are angry.
The Prime Minister said today that more could have been done.
More should have been done. And his own Antisemitism Envoy told him what needed to be done.
The Prime Minister failed to listen. The Prime Minister failed to act.
Yesterday, I had the immense privilege of addressing 2,000 members of the Bondi community at the site of the massacre. I committed that if I am elected Prime Minister, the Coalition would deal with these issues like this:
If you preach hatred, preach radical Islam, glorify terrorism or incite violence and you are not an Australian citizen – you will be deported.
And if you are an Australian citizen, you will be arrested.
On Tuesday, I swiftly established a Coalition Taskforce on Antisemitism, Extremism and Counter-Terrorism and today we released a package of measures to deal with these crucial national security issues and eradicate antisemitism. We will:
- Pass Legislation to give effect to the Special Envoy’s Plan to tackle antisemitism.
- Strengthen and modernise Australia’s counter-terrorism laws.
- Fund an enhanced counter-terrorism response.
- End Labor’s policy of self-managed returns for ISIS Brides.
- Strip Australian dual citizenship from terrorists and hate preachers and bar extremists from entering Australia.
We are calling on the Prime Minister to immediately recall Parliament to implement the necessary laws to give effect to this work.
We will never take a backward step from protecting Jewish Australians or any other Australian.
The Coalition will do whatever it takes to press for the strongest possible action from the Government to keep Australians safe.
