Congress returns today for a three-week session before its August recess and infrastructure investment should be at the top of its agenda to help boost our economy now and in the longer-term. On July 1st, the House passed the Moving Forward Act (HR 2), taking its first formal step in repairing America’s crumbling infrastructure and kickstarting COVID-19 economic recovery. The Moving Forward Act is a $1.5 trillion proposal to invest in sustainable infrastructure that will create millions of jobs, take bold action on the climate crisis, and address disparities in communities across the nation. It includes: - $40B in new wastewater infrastructure and $25B for programs such as the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund that ensure all communities have clean drinking water;
- A PFAS Infrastructure Grant Program with priority funding towards disadvantaged communities;
- $3B towards a coastal resiliency fund for shovel-ready coastal restoration projects that restore habitat for fish and wildlife, or assist in adaptation to the impacts of climate change with prioritized projects being those that stimulate the economy, create jobs for fishermen, or are located in under-resourced communities;
- Other components of the bill include $100B for broadband, $70B for clean energy projects, $100B for low income schools, $30B to upgrade hospitals, $100B in funding for public housing, and $25B for the postal service.
However, HR 2’s passage is not guaranteed as it moves into the Senate. We urge you to sign on to the American Sustainable Business Council’s letter of support for HR 2 and send your message directly to your Senators. This is our time to secure long-awaited infrastructure relief that will drive economic growth, employment, and certainty. | |
