Dear neighbors,

The last two weeks in our state have been extremely challenging and painful. Since the Federal government started its ICE operation in Minnesota, Federal agents have forced their way into private homes without warrants, drawn guns on students at college campuses, assaulted civilians, and detained children, legal residents, and U.S. citizens. It is unlawful, it is immoral, and it is being enabled and cheered by Republican lawmakers in D.C. and in Minnesota.

Across our state, neighbors are being taken from their homes and places of work, while communities are left reeling with the aftermath of these unlawful and cruel actions. Last week, ICE officials detained an employee at a cafe in Brooklyn Park [ [link removed] ] after posing as customers and later claimed to have hit the employee’s parked car, prompting him to leave the shop. This past weekend in Chanhassen [ [link removed] ], two construction workers ended up trapped on the roof of an unfinished home, in the cold, for nearly two hours while ICE agents stalked them. We’ve heard stories of ICE taking parents and leaving children behind, and citizens documenting ICE abuses being taken into custody.

We’ve also seen Minnesotans rising to the occasion to support their neighbors. We’ve seen neighbors, standing guard at schools, so kids can feel safe getting to their education. We’ve seen peaceful protestors and community members documenting ICE agents who are trampling our civil rights. We’ve seen people making sure that people have the groceries they need. Minnesotans are angry and organizing together to create stronger community bonds than ever before.

This is the Minnesota we know to be true, and it is the one we’re fighting for. I will always stand with our neighbors, and we will not back down to Trump’s attempts to divide and disrupt our communities.

When the legislative session starts in February, I will be working with my colleagues to pass legislation to protect our communities and fight back against the unlawful trampling of our civil rights. In the meantime, my office can support constituents who are being negatively impacted by these actions. If you or someone you know needs access to resources because of ICE actions in our community, or if you are witnessing unlawful actions that you would like to report, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Here [ [link removed] ] are some resources on your rights from the House DFL. I was also proud to join my colleagues in the video below, which makes it clear that we stand with our immigrant communities and against these unlawful actions.
