We have lost an American hero.

John Lewis was a civil rights icon, an unwavering champion of justice, and the moral conscience of Congress.

As a friend and a mentor, he was unmatched – a voice of clarity in noisy Washington. As a colleague, he was instrumental, collecting critical support for the Equality Act, which passed the House last year. And he was unwavering in his support for gun violence prevention efforts in Congress. In 2016, he was with us every step, organizing the sit-in on the House floor in the wake of the Pulse Nightclub massacre.

The world is more just because of his lifetime of dedication to our nation.

I am reflecting on his famous words:

“Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Our struggle is not the struggle of a day, a week, a month, or a year, it is the struggle of a lifetime. Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble.”

In his memory, the work continues. I am honored to serve in Congress to push forward his struggle – our struggle – for fairness, equality, and dignity for all.
