John,
For a moment last month, Sudan's humanitarian crisis captured global attention.
Now, only weeks later, the headlines have faded. But the devastation and need for immediate humanitarian aid has not.
Here's the latest crisis briefing:
| |
The ongoing war has pushed Sudan to the brink of collapse, and there is no end in sight.
After the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) seized El Fasher—Darfur's capital—in late October, there were reports of large numbers of families fleeing toward Tawila.
Arjan Hehenkamp, IRC's Darfur crisis lead, reported: "People arriving from El Fasher are coming from what can only be described as a hellscape, a city torn apart by conflict, destruction, and despair."
With 400,000 people newly displaced from El Fasher, Sudan is now experiencing the world's worst displacement crisis. Over 12 million people have been forced from their homes since the war erupted in 2023.
Sudan is experiencing record levels of hunger. Outbreaks of measles and cholera continue to devastate Sudan’s population, and humanitarian aid has been curtailed by fighting, leaving almost 25 million people—more than half of the population—in need.
The IRC is scaling up our emergency response in Tawila and the surrounding areas through safe water supply, mobile health clinics, cash assistance and emergency response activities to reach those most in need. |
The IRC has been on the ground in Sudan since 2019, and we're committed to keeping this crisis in the spotlight—even when the world looks away.
The IRC has responded to humanitarian crises like these for over 90 years—but we can only continue this work with support from caring friends like you, John.
Please consider making a gift today to power this work around the world while your gift will be matched to make 2X the impact.
—Heidi @ IRC
