silenced night
Whether it’s your uncle at Christmas dinner, the teenagers filming TikToks in your movie theater, or J.K. Rowling, there are times in our lives when we all wish we could just get someone to shut up.
But when you’re the president of the United States, it turns out that there are limits to shutting down speech you don’t like — like, you know, that pesky little thing called the First Amendment.
In September, Trump published a memo called the National Security Presidential Memorandum 7 (NSPM-7), which lays the groundwork for the federal government to investigate and prosecute individuals and groups who do not align with Trump’s ideologies or rhetoric by equating them with “domestic terrorism and organized political violence.”
A majority of voters think that Trump will attempt to restrict speech on several types of speech, including criticism of him and his administration as being “fascists” (59%), support for DEI efforts (55%), support for nontraditional views on gender and sexuality (53%), support for overthrowing the U.S. government (53%), criticism of the U.S. government (52%), and support for socialism (52%). A much smaller percentage of voters, however, actually want Trump to restrict this speech.
And we find that 60% of voters say they are concerned about the NSPM-7 memo, including 84% of Democrats and 70% of Independents. Notably, voters who are LGBTQ+, Black, Latino, or identify with a religion other than Christianity or no religion at all are more concerned than voters overall.
