Last month, the Trump administration announced a major attack on the Endangered Species Act, proposing new rules that would undermine the law’s effectiveness.

This isn’t the first time the Trump administration has tried to rip protections from threatened wildlife.

The first Trump administration also took aim at the Endangered Species Act, prompting Earthjustice to sue.

While some of that damage was undone in court, we’re already seeing brazen attacks against wildlife less than a year into Trump's new term. Only now, the extinction crisis has worsened, and more biodiversity has been lost.

Why it matters:

The Endangered Species Act is the single most important shield wildlife has against extinction. Earthjustice has been going to court for years to defend the law and the imperiled animals and ecosystems it protects.

Thanks to this 50-year-old landmark law, bald eagles still soar and Florida manatees endure.

But now the Trump administration has proposed new rules that would significantly weaken the ESA. This attack follows a series of other attempts this year to erode the law on behalf of polluters and extractive industries.

Most people are unwilling to sacrifice our natural world for the sake of corporate profits. Most Americans support keeping the ESA strong and saving our wildlife from the real threat of extinction.
