Dear Free Software Supporter,
In the winter 2025 Free Software Foundation (FSF) Bulletin, you can
learn about some of the nefarious ways that proprietary providers seek
to control users. When most of us power up a new console, we expect to
be able to use it as advertised, however, with Nintendo's latest DRM
scheme, some users are finding their previously-owned device bricked
before they've even used it. You can also get to know our new
president, Ian Kelling, including his background in free software and
community activism. Our licensing team explains why lax licenses are
dangerous, and we dive into the consequences of installing a Ring
video doorbell. We also share an introduction to a new new educational
project led by one of our community activists: Mission:Libre.
The winter 2025 issue of the Free Software Bulletin is now
online! You can read more about these topics in the articles below:
Last month, we sent out a printed edition of the forty-seventh edition
of the Bulletin to every FSF associate member around the world.
If you received the hard-copy magazine in your mailbox, please let us
know by snapping a picture and sharing it on your social media
accounts using the hashtag #FSFBulletin! We love hearing from the
free software community about your thoughts on the articles included
and where you sat down to read them. Once you're done reading your
copy, share it with your friends, family, and coworkers, or maybe even
leave it at your local library. This physical way of spreading the
free software message brings us new activists every year from all
corners of the world!
If you didn't receive a paper copy of the Free Software Bulletin,
you can get one by becoming an associate member! It's one of many
great benefits you get as an associate member, all while
supporting our work to guarantee user freedom for everyone. For as
little as $12 USD a month ($6 USD for students), or a one-time
donation, you will help us reach our fundraising goal and
protect freedom long into the future.
