HSEâs abortion apology is a start - but baby Christopherâs story mustnât end there
Back in 2021, AontĂș leader Peadar TĂłibĂn was interrupted in the DĂĄil by Solidarity-People Before Profit members as he attempted to question the Taoiseach over the Holles Street abortion scandal and the delay in providing answers to the parents of baby Christopher who was aborted in the National Maternity Hospital following a misdiagnosis that indicated he had a life-limiting condition.
That an Oireachtas member could be shouted down for raising such a serious and troubling issue speaks volumes about the state of political discourse in our parliament.
The HSE, for its part, dragged its feet in issuing an apology to baby Christopherâs parents over the death of their son, but an âunequivocalâ apology was finally issued last weekend. Though long overdue, it is nevertheless a welcome development. The CEO of the HSE also announced that there will be an independent review into the case over what went wrong.

Patricia Heaton challenges Icelandâs treatment of unborn babies with Down syndrome
Actress Patricia Heaton, best known for her leading role in the sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, is using her voice to call out whatâs happening to unborn babies with Down Syndrome in Iceland, and
how the media is portraying it.
It all started when CBS posted a tweet that appeared to frame the situation in Iceland in a positive light. The tweet referenced the countryâs near absence of Down syndrome cases among newborns. But CBS failed to mention that Icelandâs results arenât due to new treatments or expanded support - they stem from abortion following prenatal testing.
Patricia Heaton didnât mince words in responding to CBS, saying: âIceland isnât actually eliminating Down syndrome. Theyâre just killing everybody that has it. Big difference.â In Iceland, nearly 100% of unborn babies diagnosed with Down syndrome are aborted.
IFPA escapes scrutiny thanks to fawning media
You barely have to poke the Irish Family Planning Associationâs latest claim before it falls apart.
In their 2024 annual report, they argue that thereâs âno scientific supportâ for the three-day waiting period before an abortion. They base the claim on the fact that 98% of their clients over a 12 month period went on to access abortion after the waiting period elapsed.
What the IFPA doesnât point out in their report is that their clients account for just 6% of the consultations that take place in Ireland annually. While the IFPA purports that less than 2% of its clients do not proceed with an abortion after the three-day wait, national statistics suggest a much higher figure â around 9% in 2024 did not go through with an abortion in the end.
Out of 12,641 first consultations in 2024, only 10,441 returned for the second visit after the three day wait. After excluding miscarriages and hospital-based abortions based on IFPA percentages for these groups, more than 1,000 women appear not to have returned and instead continued their pregnancies.

Niall Boylanâs wide-ranging interview with EilĂs Mulroy
Listen back to Niall Boylanâs in-depth interview from Monday with EilĂs Mulroy of the Pro Life Campaign, which focussed on the IFPAâs latest call for the scrapping of the three-day wait before an abortion. Niall and EilĂs also discussed, among other things, the reality of babies surviving late-term
abortions in Ireland and the need for protocols to ensure they are given proper medical care and not left to die alone.
