U.S. Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Dick Durbin (D-IL) reintroduced the bipartisan Dream Act of 2025, which would allow individuals without legal status who came to the United States as children to earn lawful permanent residence if they meet certain education, military service, or work requirements.
As you may know, Judge Andrew Hanen of U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas will soon issue a ruling on whether Texas DACA recipients can continue to legally work. A ruling in favor of ending work authorization for these individuals would impact 89,000 Texas workers, who would have to leave the state in order to apply for a work permit. Texas DACA recipients currently contribute $2 billion in taxes and wield a spending power of $6.2 billion, working in industries like hospitality, retail, healthcare, education, construction, agriculture, and technology. An exodus of DACA recipients from Texas would greatly harm the state's workforce, economy, and communities. The Dream Act of 2025 would be a solution to this problem.
In addition, we continue to be concerned about the legal status of DACA recipients nationally. Over 537,000 DACA recipients live and work in the U.S., paying $11.9 billion in taxes and wielding a spending power of $35 billion. DACA recipients came to the U.S. as children, attended U.S. schools, and are law-abiding, taxpaying contributors to our nation. Ending work authorization for these individuals would disrupt industries and employers who rely on their talent and skills.
