Dear readers:

For years, Mark Carney cultivated a reputation as a global climate leader. Remember his efforts to convince financial elites to take the threat of soaring global temperatures seriously?

But ever since becoming Canada’s prime minister this year, the former Bank of England governor has seemed to do everything possible to sell out the country to the oil and gas industry. 

Thanks to readers like you, we’ve assigned a team of reporters to track Carney’s handouts to fossil fuel producers to call out his hypocrisy. Over the summer, Daniel Mesec reported on Carney’s approval of a massive new LNG plant that could cause fracking to skyrocket. 

And just last week, Mitch Anderson pointed out the double bind Carney created for First Nations by agreeing to build a new oil pipeline to the west coast of British Columbia that could see crude-filled tankers sailing daily through Canada’s pristine Great Bear Rainforest.

This week, we broke the news that Build Canada, a corporate advocacy group founded by tech and fossil fuel billionaires, is directly influencing the Liberal prime minister. In fact, Carney referenced the group in a speech this fall.

And that’s not all. 

Build Canada CEO Lucy Hargreaves told DeSmog reporter Taylor Noakes that the Prime Minister’s Office “has reached out” to the group about its policy memos. “It’s great to see ideas shared by the Build Canada community get taken up by government,” Hargreaves explained. That community includes Alberta oil tycoon Adam Waterous, who recently announced that he wants to double Canadian oil production. Dive into the story for more.

However, as of November 2025, Emerging Ag lacks formal climate commitments, such as a net-zero target or a commitment not to work with highly-emitting clients.
