more than 20 municipalities and over 4 million residents
For the first time in nearly 30 years, a Democrat has won the mayor’s office in the City of Miami.
Eileen Higgins defeated her Republican opponent by more than 19 percent, a truly decisive margin.
This is remarkable. Miami has long been considered the largest metropolitan area dominated by Republicans since the early 2000s.
And now, a Democrat is leading it!
Voters turned out because they understand how important strong and responsible local governance is, especially at a time when the Trump administration is attacking American cities.
Local government has always mattered. But now, it matters even more. We have to safeguard our local institutions from Trump and from agencies he has weaponized, like ICE. Here in Maricopa County, we have nearly 5 million residents and more than 20 municipalities--areas that could easily be targeted due to the large Latino population across our county.
At MCDP, we are committed to getting the right leaders elected at the local level, whether countywide or in our cities and towns, because these communities need protection, representation, and real investment.
