“Everything has just gone up - I don't know how we will get through December”
That’s what I hear regularly from people, when I talk to them around London every week.
This isn’t people grumbling, in recent years people’s wages have struggled to keep up with prices. And a huge part of that is the increase in food prices. Right now as we all prepare for the Christmas holidays, it’s particularly noticeable. |
Some of that is out of our control - such as the impact of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. But a large chunk of it is because of Brexit. An estimate from the London School of Economics is that this cost has been £250 for each family in Britain. |
That’s why Liberal Democrats are campaigning to rejoin Europe’s Customs Union. This would bring down food prices, and start to reverse the damage done by Brexit. It would lower food prices for everybody - and we would all benefit from it. Our MPs in Parliament are working hard to make this happen - on Tuesday our customs union bill passed its first stage in the House of Commons. We need your help to make sure everyone supports this bill at the next stage.
It’s common sense, except to the Labour party, who refuse to do this, and the Conservatives who oppose.
