I’m a brown guy with a funny name from Peoria, Illinois, running for US Senate to fight for a better future for hardworking Americans. I got my first major job in Illinois politics working for another guy from Illinois with a funny name on his first Senate campaign. His name was Barack Obama.
When I first started working for President Obama back in 1999, it was a far cry from where he’d eventually end up. He was about as different from the mainstream politicians as they come — he came from an immigrant background and had a “funny name”. I’d never thought that someone like me could run for office – let alone win.
Now, I know it can seem like we’re a long way away from the era of “hope and change”. I certainly miss having a real President in office instead of a wannabe dictator like Donald Trump. Right now, it’s clear that we need real leaders with a backbone to stand up to Donald Trump’s insanity and fight for the same issues that President Obama championed. Because every family – regardless of who they are, where they live, or how funny their name might sound – deserves the chance to work hard and succeed.
