Today is Human Rights Day, a reminder of the fundamental protections that belong to every single one of us.
While there are thirty articles in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, two of them weigh heavily on our minds today:
Article 3: Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person.
Article 26: Everyone has the right to education.
The reality in our country is that these two rights often feel like they are in conflict. We cannot claim our children have a true "right to education" if they are denied the "security of person" while they learn. When students are scanning for exits instead of listening to a lesson, or when teachers are planning escape routes instead of grading papers, that right to education is being eroded by fear.
Students deserve to walk into school focused on their future, not their survival. Teachers deserve to focus on their curriculum, not their courage. And families deserve the peace of mind that comes from knowing their children are safe.
That is why Teachers Unify exists. We are working to restore the security of our schools so that the right to education can truly flourish. From equipping families with secure storage education to bringing educators to the policy tables where decisions are made, we are building a future where safety is the standard, not the exception.
Teachers Unify is a grassroots movement of educators across America whose mission is to empower its constituents and supporters to demand that communities are safe from gun violence.
