Dear John,

As the year draws to a close, I want to thank you for your support of our work during this tumultuous time in our state and our country. We must be willing to fight for our environment, our democracy, and the right of North Carolinians to have both. With your help, the North Carolina League of Conservation Voters will continue to aggressively stand up on your behalf  and for all who believe in a better North Carolina.

The pro-polluter, anti-democracy majority in Raleigh has made it very clear whose side they are on this year with regular assaults on our environment and democracy. They passed and then overrode Gov. Josh Stein’s veto to enact the Duke Energy giveaway, which rolled back interim carbon reduction targets. It also allowed Duke to bill ratepayers for new dirty methane power plants while they are still being built. 

Then, they came back to Raleigh in October to pass a new Congressional gerrymandered map that disenfranchises Black voters in eastern North Carolina to help Donald Trump avoid accountability for his awful policies. They did this while still failing to pass a state budget, which leaves Medicaid recipients facing severe cuts and underpaid teachers without raises. 

Next year is an opportunity, though. An opportunity to make it clear – this is not the North Carolina we want. That’s why I’m calling on you at this critical time. Voters still have the final say and voting is the most important thing we can do for the environment. With your help, we will work tirelessly, effectively, and strategically to elect more environmental and pro-democracy champions, while holding our opponents accountable. 

We will also continue to shine a light on recovery from Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina. This devastating storm has made it clear that we face an ongoing threat from the increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather. We are proud to support Gov. Stein’s focus on resilient recovery, but we know more needs to be done.

This year has certainly been challenging. However, we have aggressively stood up to those who threaten our quality of life and, with your continued support, we will keep up the fight. Please join us. North Carolina is worth it!
