Dear Friends,

Today, December 10, commemorates the 77th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was the first time the international community agreed on a set of common values affirming that rights are inherent to every single human being without exception.

On this special day highlighting the necessity of universal human rights, we invite you to join us for “How to Advance Human Rights in the Current Context: A NRCAT Human Rights Day Webinar” at noon ET/9am PT. We’ll discuss how faith communities are working side-by-side with advocacy partners to advance human rights. Speakers will include NRCAT staff members Rev. Ron Stief, Executive Director, and Directors Johnny Perez and Rev. T.C. Morrow. Register here.

Human Rights Day reminds us of our commitment to our shared values. NRCAT’s campaigns to equip survivors, educate communities, and advocate for policy change depends on your support. We invite you to donate to NRCAT’s year-end campaign, We Refuse to Back Down. Your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $30,000.

For this year’s Human Rights Day, the United Nations has chosen the theme of Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials, noting that human rights “shape our daily lives, often in ways we may not always notice.” The suffering being experienced by victims of torture is often hidden out of sight. Some are immigrants denied their human rights in court and now experiencing abuse behind bars. Others are the men still being held at Guantánamo. Still others are among the 122,000 people who are isolated in solitary confinement cells in U.S. prisons and jails -- out of sight and out of mind.

NRCAT has worked tirelessly to advocate for the human rights of these individuals in 2025. This fall we co-sponsored an 18-city Journey for Justice Bus Tour with Unlock the Box and Look2Justice. This traveling art and educational exhibit both inspired and recognized the hard work of local and state campaigns to end solitary confinement. At the final stop in Washington D.C., Senator Ed Markey, sponsor of the federal End Solitary Confinement Act, joined us on the bus and added his voice to those of solitary survivors and faith leaders at our press conference.

Your donation today will allow NRCAT to continue our work of ensuring the human rights of everyone in 2026 and beyond.

With gratitude,
The NRCAT Team, Ron, T.C., Johnny, Naquasia, and Nicole
