Team,
The Trump Administration is holding $9.7 million worth of contraceptives hostage in a warehouse in Belgium.
This is happening because the Trump administration dismantled the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) earlier this year and planned to incinerate the still-usable birth control.
According to the New York Times, the contraceptives slated to be destroyed – that were bought and paid for by US taxpayers – were enough to prevent approximately 362,000 unintended pregnancies, 110,000 unsafe abortions, and 718 maternal deaths. And it was destined for clinics in the poorest countries in Africa.
As Associate Director of Advocacy at MSI Reproductive Choices, Sarah Shaw, said to the NYT, “It’s just egregious that they’re willing to waste $9 million worth of contraceptives that are so desperately needed. Women are going to die because they’ve not had access to those contraceptives.”
This is just another example of the lengths that Trump and his MAGA cronies will go to attack reproductive rights – and it’s not unique to the federal government. Republicans in Virginia blocked a bill to protect birth control during the previous session, and women’s rights are being stripped away across the nation. That is why it is critical that we fight to enshrine reproductive rights in our state constitution.
It only takes a single election for control of the government to flip, and we need to protect our rights regardless of who is in office. Will you chip in $25 to protect access to contraception in Virginia?
