“All human beings are born free and equal.”
Because President Franklin Roosevelt’s mobility was limited by polio, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt acted as "the President's eyes, ears, and legs.”
During the Great Depression, she traveled throughout the country inspecting New Deal relief projects, talking to people in hard-hit communities and reporting back to the President on the progress of his New Deal programs. Her travels informed her own role as a champion for civil rights, women's rights and as a voice for the voiceless.
Mrs. Roosevelt considered the Declaration of Human Rights her highest achievement.
After FDR’s death in 1945, President Harry Truman appointed Mrs. Roosevelt the chairperson of the drafting committee for the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights. She is widely credited with expanding the language from “All men are born free and equal,” to “All human beings are born free and equal,” enshrining for the first time that fundamental human rights are universally protected regardless of "race, color, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status." Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 10, 1948, these principles remain a cornerstone of international human rights law today. The anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is commemorated annually around the world as Human Rights Day.
