International Human Rights Day: The time to act is now

It’s International Human Rights Day – a day to celebrate the incredible achievements and resilience of activists and rights defenders around the world, but also to consider the moment we find ourselves in.

Today, our Regional Director for Europe, Antanina Maslyka, reflects on what this moment means for the human rights movement – and the radical change needed to confront the global assault on our rights and freedoms.

In the ‘war of narratives’ we must show that human rights belong to no government, no interest group, no political agenda. Their legitimacy and importance come from lived experiences, from the people who risk the most to defend them. We should listen to their brave voices, amplify them, rely on their knowledge, and get out of their way when needed.

On International Human Rights Day, we draw inspiration from brave, resilient journalists and activists around the globe.

Our podcast series Silenced charts and celebrates these voices, recognising the journalists and activists who defend and protect human rights, and acknowledging the daily risks they face to get truth out to the world.

Speaking to journalist Nicola Kelly, Brazil’s Juliana Dal Piva ([link removed] ) gives a powerful account of investigating corruption at the highest levels of power, and the personal and professional ramifications of exposing the truth, including receiving death threats. Anna Myroniuk ([link removed] ) recalls the early, terrifying days of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and the barriers to delivering impartial news and information to the world against a backdrop of missile strikes, internet shutdowns, and an aggressive Russian disinformation campaign. And Hiba Morgan ([link removed]) talks about being the last remaining international correspondent in Khartoum, Sudan in 2023 in a conflict that many are still today calling ‘the
forgotten war’.

In Boundaries of Expression, Jo Glanville speaks to leading advocates for human rights for Iran. Simin Fahandej of the Bahá’í International Community and the Siamak Pourzand Foundation’s Azadeh Pourzand discuss threats to their work, including a steep rise in digitally-enabled harassment targeting minority communities. Despite persistent pressure, they both point to the strength and resilience of Iran’s civil society.

PLUS:

‘Freedom of expression is not an abstract political concept or a luxury – it’s our everyday essential,’ says ARTICLE 19’s Senior Malaysia ([link removed]) Programme Officer. The government must do more to ensure everyone is free to express themselves without fear.

Today we call for Hong Kong to release activists Chow Hang-tung and Lee Cheuk-yan ([link removed]) . Authorities must stop targeting individuals who exercise their human rights, particularly the rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly.

One donation, twice the impact for freedom of expression.

Thank you to those who gave last week. As we were able to secure a champion donor, there is still time to have an even greater impact on our work, as every donation you make today will be doubled.
