Essential to Wyoming’s Future: Governor Targets Agriculture and Wildfire Preparedness
“Wyoming farmers and ranchers… potentially our whole economy – are threatened if we do not get this one right.”
CHEYENNE, Wyo. - Dec. 9, 2025 - Gov. Mark Gordon (R-WY) today underscored two essential priorities in his budget: strengthening Wyoming’s agricultural backbone and addressing increasingly severe wildfire seasons.
“Wyoming’s strength has always come from the people who work this land and protect it,” the Governor said. “Supporting agriculture and building a stronger wildfire response are essential to preserving the Wyoming we inherited and ensuring the Wyoming our children deserve.”
The Governor reaffirmed in his budget message how Wyoming industries work and live side by side. “We understand we can have energy development alongside a thriving agricultural industry and a vigorous environment that supports abundant wildlife, superb recreational opportunities, and tourism assets.”
Reaffirming agriculture as a core Wyoming industry, Gordon emphasized the strong partnership between the agricultural industry and the Office of State Lands. Approximately 98% of state lands are leased for grazing. Agriculture and state lands play a role in supporting the state’s economy and communities when he said in his message: “This budget recommendation is predicated on supporting our core industries: agriculture, energy, mining, and tourism.”
But the Governor pointed to much needed support for his budget proposals and initiatives like his recently launched Cowboy State Agriculture Initiative to ensure legacy industries like agriculture can continue to thrive in the Cowboy state.
“Wyoming farmers and ranchers… potentially our whole economy – are threatened if we do not get this one right,” Gordon said.
Citing consecutive years of severe wildfires across the state, Gordon also called for immediate enhancements to Wyoming’s firefighting capacity.
“Current assets are not adequate to fight today’s fires,” he said. “We must expand and rethink our ability and approach to wildland fires and other disasters. It is time to devote limited full-time resources to protect our lands and homes.”
These proposals reflect Gordon’s broader commitment to safeguard Wyoming’s people, land and core industries through prudent investment and forward-looking stewardship. Wyoming can not build its future by looking backward.
“Nostalgia is sweet, but it is not a recipe for the future. We cannot budget in the past to prepare for our future,” the Governor said.
