Friend, Trump’s constant attacks on Somali-Americans have consequences.
His lies, his conspiracies, and especially his threats of violent immigration crackdowns have sown fear and pain for no reason other than to scapegoat a vulnerable community.
A usually-bustling mall here in Minneapolis that offers hundreds of local Somali vendors was described as a “ghost city” this past weekend.
US citizens and long-term legal US residents alike are carrying passports and documents out of fear of being swept up in ICE’s ongoing racial profiling.
One Minnesota native of Somali descent told NBC News: “Nobody is leaving their homes right now... They don’t even have anything to run for. They’re citizens. They’ve been living here for years.”
Next door in Wisconsin, a Somali-American couple was harassed, attacked for their religion, and called horrible racial slurs while simply going out to eat.
And conservative “influencers” and far-right media have descended on Somali-American communities across the Midwest to spread hateful propaganda and harass regular people going about their lives.
These are the real-world consequences of reckless rhetoric. And we’ve seen it time and time again from Trump. He’s attacked Mexicans, El Salvadorans, Haitians, Venezuelans, Yemenis, Palestinians, Afghans, all Muslims, and now Somali-Americans.
As Ilhan has said, Trump has to lash out like this to distract us from his failures. It’s his entire playbook: He pits working-class people of different backgrounds against each other to keep us from uniting against him and the billionaire class.
But thankfully, the American people know better. Despite the extremists on the fringe, we’ve seen an outpouring of support from across the country. Americans understand that immigrants built this country, made it what it is, and continue to contribute to our economy and our social fabric.
So thank you to everyone who stands in solidarity with Ilhan Omar, Minneapolis, and the Somali-American community.
We won’t stop fighting for the better world we know is possible. We won’t stop calling out racism and standing by our neighbors. We will defeat hate and division and put forward a positive agenda that lifts everybody up.
