Last week, I took an Uber ride in Austin, Texas, with a loquacious driver, proud of his town and eager to connect. Late twenties, maybe early thirties—old enough to have watched elections come and go, young enough to have the energy for hope.
Like a good salesman, he asked what I did for work. I explained that I worked in the voting rights and democracy space.
That’s when he said it. Casually at first, like a confession without shame.
“I never voted before,” he told me, eyes still on the road. Then he added, “But I did this last time.”
He said he tries to be independent-minded. He doesn’t trust politicians much—doesn’t trust promises or parties. But what he said next stayed with me. ...
